Amsterdam, 25 November 2009 – For the first time, users of an embedded navigation system can get new advanced routing features without buying a whole new system.  Carminat TomTom users can now benefit from even smarter and more efficient navigation, in addition to safer driving.

The updated Carminat TomTom will plan the fastest route by using the driving experiences of millions of TomTom users worldwide (IQ Routes™)1. Motoristswill also drive safer and less stressed with the popular advanced lane guidance2, which gives clarity when navigating difficult junctions and crossing multiple lanes.

These two useful features come as part of any new Carminat TomTom map3 which can be easily added to the device, thanks to its removable SD card drive and TomTom’s free desktop software application (TomTom HOME). This updating method is already used by Carminat TomTom drivers to update all kinds of content, from POIs to voices, on their device.

Drivers automatically get the IQ Routes and advanced lane guidance features when they buy their next map or activate their latest map guarantee, which allows them to get the latest map for free within 60 days after they first use their device.

“Now users of Carminat TomTom can have smarter and safer routing by easily downloading the features themselves – a first in the automotive industry,” said Giles Shrimpton, TomTom’s Managing Director Automotive. “This is an important milestone in our ongoing drive to help the automotive industry meet the needs of its customers.”

Carminat TomTom was introduced in April 2009, first with the launch of the new Clio and Scenic, later on the Megane and Laguna and most recently on the new Fluencebringing affordable in-dash navigation to the mainstream car industry.

Notes for editors

1IQ Routes
TomTom IQ Routes applies the historical travel time experience of millions of drivers to calculate the fastest route possible. The technology is based on historical speed measurements for every time of day, one for every road segment, from large motorways to small local roads. In up to 35% of all cases, the use of IQ Routes results in driving a faster route, saving significant travel time as well as money and fuel.

2Advanced lane guidance
This handy feature clearly shows drivers which lane to take at junctions, so they don’t miss turns. This is particularly useful on busy highway intersections, where getting in the right lane at the right time can be stressful and potentially dangerous.

3Maps available for Carminat TomTom users are: United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, Benelux, DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), France, Iberia (Spain, Portugal), Italy, Scandinavia, , Full Europe (including Russia, Turkey Greece), Asia Africa (Southern Africa, Brunei, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore), Australia & New Zealand, America (Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay).
